Non-Quotation Disclaimer

This is new. At the end of David Berube's recent article against
critiques he writes,

"None of the above statements directly attributable to me should
be used as evidence in a debate round."

I am not sure what theory of authorship would permit writers to exercise
control over how their words are used after they are _published_. Once
the material becomes publicly available, I don't understand the author's
ability to say, "don't quote me on that."

There may be many reasons not to use Berube's evidence in a debate round
(e.g., I think debaters would be better served by going to the sources
that David cites; I think the same about my own articles), but an author
of a published work cannot withold permission to quote.
