George R.R. Pflaum Debates
October 18-20, 1997
September 4, 1997
The Division of Communication and Theatre Arts of Emporia State
University will host the 43rd Annual George R.R. Pflaum Debate
Tournament on October 18-20, 1997. You are invited to bring up to four
teams in each division. We are pleased to offer an Open and a Junior
Division of debate. Both divisions will debate the 1997/98 National Topic.
The Pflaum Tournament will once again serve as a qualifying tournament
for the Jesuit Round Robin National Championships.
1997/98 National Intercollegiate Debate Topic: RESOLVED: that the United
States Federal Government should substantially increase its security
assistance to one or more of the following Southeast Asian nations:
Brunei Darussalam, Myanmar (Burma), Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos,
Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam.
(Open) Two person, switch-sides, cross-examination debate, with four
pre-set and four rounds power-matched (5 & 7 are high/high; 6 & 8 are
high/low within win-loss brackets). 8-3-5 (8 prep).
(Junior Varsity) Two person, switch-sides, cross-examination debate,
with three or four rounds preset and two or three rounds
power-matched (a seventh round will be added if numbers justify it).
Power matching will alternate high/high and high/low within brackets.
The division is limited to debaters with no more than three semesters of
collegiate debate. 8-3-5 (8 prep).
JUDGING: We hope you will attend with your team or teams. While
Emporia is rich in many things, the availability of qualified hired judges is
not one of them. We have virtually no judges available for hire. Your
absence simply means a heavier burden will be placed on your
colleagues. We will not guarantee the availability of any hired judges.
Judges covering two teams may expect to judge EIGHT preliminary
rounds; judges covering one team may expect to judge FIVE preliminary
rounds. All judges are expected to remain through the selection of
quarter-final panels. All coaches of teams in the elimination rounds are
expected to remain through the selection of final round panels unless
previously cleared through the tournament director.
AWARDS: Awards will be given to all teams in the elimination rounds.
Appropriate "spiffy" ESU Hornet awards will be given to the top
speakers in each division.
FEES: Per two-person team with judge: $60
Per two-person team without judge: * $140
* Applies only if hired judges are available
