Assistant or Associate Professor in Argumentation
The Department of Communication, University of Utah
The Department of Communication, University of Utah, invites applications
for a tenure track assistant or associate professor effective July 1,
1998. Applicants should have primary background in argumentation and
debate with secondary expertise in an area such as legal communication,
criticism of public discourse, international communication, or conflict
resolution. Duties include graduate and undergraduate teaching in
argumentation and related courses, directing theses and dissertations,
conducting an active research program, and directing a nationally-ranked
debate and forensics program.
Qualifications: Ph.D. and experience in similar appointment required.
Evidence of significant scholarship and excellent teaching.
Rank and Salary: Tenure track position, Assistant or Associate Professor,
salary competitive.
The University: The University of Utah is the major state institution of
higher education and is located in Salt Lake City. The metropolitan area
has over 800,000 people. Student enrollment at the University is
approximately 26,000.
The Department: The Department of Communication offers baccalaureate
degrees in Mass Communication and Speech communication and Master's and
Ph.D. degrees in Communication. The department has over 1000
undergraduate majors and approximately 100 graduate majors. There are 27
full-time faculty.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "spread too thin". If each
individual on the team is expected to do "X" amount of research, why would
it be to that senior (beginner) a disadvantage to do it on a different
topic? If it is because their research needs to contribute to the whole
of the team, how are you gouing to get the advantage of that research if
they don't participate because they don't like the way CEDA is? At least this
way the student gets the advantage of participating in debate, whereas the
alternative is too often "naw, I don't wanna do that."

P.S. - One of the points I was trying to emphasize was that if it is the same
topic, or even the same topic area, there are going to be the same resource
equity issues that exist in CEDA now. It will not be a draw to schools who
are leaving (or have left) for that reason. Why would they re-enter, just
to face more of the same?
