Fellow Debate Afficionados,
The University of Richmond Debate Team would like to take this opportunity
to invite you to the 1998 Spider Classic tournament to be held October 9,
10, and 11.
We have tradditionally offered three healthy divisions of team debate in
Novice, Junior Varsity, and Varsity. During the past two years, outrounds
in both Novice and Junior Varsity have reached octofinals, and Varsity has
reached quarterfinals. All three divisions will debate the resolution:
"Resolved: that the United States Federal Government should amend Title VII
of the Civil Rights act of 1964, through legislation, to create additional
protections against racial and/or gender discrimination."
This year, we will also be offering a fourth division, in PUBLIC DEBATE, on
the preapproved CEDA narrow topic.
Tournament Fees: We charge a $40 entry fee per team, or $35 a team if you
bring four or more teams. We charge a $90 judging fee for each uncovered team.
Please consider bringing extra judges, we can always use them, and we will
pay them well! In the spirit of encouraging new debate, we will continue to
waive
entry fees for new programs or programs with financial hardships. (We also
offer free housing!)
Lodging: Holiday Inn West Broad (804) 285-9951. $51 per night. Rooms are
held under "Richmond Debate." THE ROOMS WILL ONLY BE HELD UNTIL SEPTEMBER
22ND, SO PLEASE MAKE RESERVATIONS NOW!!
Schedule: Two rounds on Friday, Four rounds on Saturday, elimination rounds
on Sunday. Pre-registration will be held Thursday evening at the hotel
between 9 pm and midnight. Campus maps will be available there and by mail.
Regular registration will take place on Friday afternoon in Jepson Hall
from 2 pm to 4 pm. We will provide campus and area maps. Rounds will begin
promptly at 4:30 pm. A 15 minute forfeit rule will be strictly enforced.
ENTRIES ARE DUE BY PHONE, FAX, OR E-MAIL NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY OCTOBER
7th, AT 5:30 PM. Please call early - a rough head count is always
appreciated ahead of time. There is no limit to the number of teams entered
by a school. However, please be advised that you may be asked to cover
judges for any teams in excess of 2.
We offer interesting and attractive awards (our mascot is a BIG BUG!),
great debate, free food between pairing breaks, all in a beautiful campus
environment! (Just ask anyone what Virginia autumn weather is like!) What
else could you ask for?
Looking forward to seeing you in Richmond this October!!!
Enthusiastically,
Lisa K. Heller

Subject: New Info for Frank Irizarry
Greetings! After two months without E-mail, a horrendous move to New York City, 3 and a half weeks in Salt Lake City, and all sorts of settling in, I just got my new account at Pace today. Here's info for anyone that may want it.
