While working on the Russia topic last night I came across an interesting
article from The Daily Mail May 28, 1998 which argued that the decision to
drop
the bomb had little to do with getting to Japan to surrender because there
was a strong sense among insiders that surrender was inevitable and close.
Instead they argue that the decision was intended to send a signal to
Russia and to deny them any role in claiming to have contributed to
victory over Japan. It argues that Truman moved the date of the bombing
up to make sure it took place prior to August 8, the day Russia was to
declare war on Japan. It is an interesting article which those
participating in this thread should look at.
