Danger to womyn.

I also rarely have said anything on e-debate, but I find this discussion
particularly relevant to me. While I wholeheartedly agree that women face
enormous barriers in debate, and have personally experienced some things
in debate that make me sick, I think that we are missing a very large
point. And I think it is something that is reflected within the
discussion of the topic within rounds, as well as the discussion on
edebate.

When we discuss diversity in debate I feel like we are leaving out people
with multiple struggles. For example, last year I had the pleasure of
debating with Shanara Reid. Because we were both women, judges were
forced to speak to at least one of us. Because Shanara is black, however,
there were plenty of times she felt the multiple burden of the
intersection of racism and sexism. (And I don't mean to speak for her)
My struggles as a women in this activity, with feminism as debate
argument, etc.. pale in comparsion to the struggles of courageous women
like Shanara. It disturbs me that on a topic about race and gender we
seem to have generally focused the topic on gender, and our discussions
about women in debate. While I clearly think those issues deserve lengthy
discussion and attention, it seems to me that maybe we should implement
the intersectionality kritik on ourselves.
