executive council votes

Colleagues--

There has been a lot of innuendo regarding the Executive Council's use of
"secret ballots." Here's what happened:

The Executive Council met at CEDA Nationals to select the editor for the
organization's journal, Contemporary Argument and Debate. The CEDA
Constitution charges the Executive Council with the final decision of
choosing the editor. Because this was a personnel decision and we were
discussing the relative merits of individuals, not of policy issues, it
seemed appropriate, as we do in all elections, to use ballots. This
procedure is consistent with the standard operating procedure of most
organizations.

Of course, you may still disagree that this type of decision should take
place via balloting, but I thought it was important for you to know the
context.

Please contact me if you have any further questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Dr. Gina Lane
