This self-identify crap when it comes to sex drives me crazy. Its
a priveledge not to be sexed/gendered in our society or not to have to
think about the fact that I'm a woman. It wasn't self identification that
led me to womanhood or to feel a shared experience with other
women. The label follows from experience. Those women who were in the
finals of the NDT share one. How about if I lay it for you really simply
(substitute a self-identified women in place of the I's if you like):
I had the pleasure of being less likely to find sports that I'm allowed to
play in when I'm growing up, have a special bathroom just for people
like me, am told that I look better with makeup, shaved legs etc., or when
I get out of line I'm reminded to "act like a lady," frequently I get
picked to x (fill in the blank) because its time
to pick a "girl," when I was debating I was
called a bitch, too hostile, a sweetie, honey, sugar, winked at,
pinched, and hit on by judges and other debaters. Sometimes I liked it,
sometimes I didn't. It was always a conundrum. Now I'm all grown up
and for fun I look forward to encountering glass ceilings in employment
opportunities, look forward to following my spouse's employment
committments, realized that I get gawked/hooted at/felt up/squeezed/called
honey far more often than most people with a Y chromosome in the "real
world as well" just so that I can have someone tell me that its not OK
for someone to call me a woman (under the auspices that I lack a
voice/need to be protected... that the label is stigmatizing...)
until I "self-identify" with the cause. Give me a break.
