drugs

Here are the proposed wordings in the topic paper. I'm curious which one
of these wordings do people think would make for a well balanced debate
topic?

Resolved: That one or more of the penalties prescribed by the
Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of
1970 should be made less severe.

Resolved: That the U.S. Federal Government should legalize one or more of
the following: marijuana, cocaine, heroin,
amphetamines, or anabolic steroids.

Resolved: That the U.S. Federal Government should increase the use of the
military in efforts to prevent drugs from entering the
United States.

Resolved: That the U.S. Federal Government should allow the use of
marijuana for medical purposes.

Resolved: That the U.S. Federal Government should terminate the process of
certifying the governments of other nations as
effective drug fighters.

At the topic committee meeting I suggested that we might be able to
construct a good topic in the areas of drug testing and drug approval but
other members of the committee pointed out quite correctly that we would
be moving far away
from the topic paper and what those voting for the topic might have in
mind when they think of drug legalization.

I oppose the drug topic. I am sure there are many who are silent yet feel the
same way. I am disturbed at the fact that well respected people and
representatives in the community are accused of the ridiculous.

Its almost like a baby mentality...if I don't get what I want...I will yell
louder...kick up as much dust...and maybe this is the way to facilitate
change. Its counterproductive, unprofessional, and offensive.

Perhaps we could start the "NDT--National Drug Topic" and those who are so
into the position have go for it...the rest of us would like to get on with
the task of finding a well balanced topic and defer to the people we put in
charge to make good sound decisions...without fear of "spam" mentality on
e-debate.

It is not an easy task to find a topic with reasonable limits on the aff and
neg that will be interesting for an entire season. This is already old...lets
move on...its not an e-mail democracy for those with the most time to
"spam"...and assume that what goes on in the list represents the will of the
entire community.

My two cents...
