The Point of the Byrd Debate

HI, The point is not that Bush garbled the stats on who was or who wasn't sentenced to death (all 3 vs. 2 and 1 life sentence). The point is: If you are going to kill 2 and leave the other in jail for life with no chance of parole, what else could you possibly do to them under a hate crimes bill? Should you kill them twice, or sentence them to consecutive life terms? Bush was pointing out that under the existing law, some pretty harsh penalties were handed down, and that a hate crimes bill would be superfluous in that situation. I knew that the liberals among the community would jump all over the "mistake," whithout taking a moment to consider the larger issue that Bush was getting at. If you enforce the laws that are on the books, additional protections aren't needed. Murder is Murder, doesn't make a difference who was murdered, or why...it's still murder, and it should still be dealth with harshly. Look past the tendancy to nitpick and look at the larger issue. Duane
