Hi again...
I dont know how many of you read my first post...I fear it was a victim to
the "select all, delete" phenomenon. No matter. Here it is again. I hope
you will take time to read, respond and send me your thoughts. Thank you to
all of you who responded the first go around.
For those of you that don't know me, I'm a junior at Michigan State and have
been involved in debate since my freshman year of high school. But my post
has little to do with debate apart from my desire to give back to the
community that has given me so much. Allow me to explain.
I was diagnosed with lupus erythematosus, a chronic auto-immune disease,
when I was four. I have suffered complications, long hospitalizations and
only recently has my disease been in a remission of sorts. I have also,
since I was quite young, looked to art as a way to express myself and to an
extent deal with my illness. Two summers ago, I decided to combine these
two important parts of my life in an attempt to give back to the community.
The result was the Lupus Scholarship Fund, a non-profit organization that
provides scholarships to college bound and college students with chronic,
debilitating diseases. The first fundraiser, which was held in August 1999,
was a sale of my paintings, drawings and sculptures. The four hour event
raised awareness, support and $10,000 for the cause. It was only through
the help of friends, family, volunteers and members of the debate community
that the event was as successful as it was. For that reason I am reaching
out once again.
The money raised during the first fundraiser will be given to four students
that display high academic achievement, leadership and suffer from a chronic
illness. One scholarship of $1500 will go exclusively to a member of the
debate community--either a high school senior or current college student.
For those of you that know individuals outside of the debate community that
suffer from lupus (SLE), there are two more scholarships of $1500 available.
Scholarship recipients will be announced at the second annual fundraiser
on January 21st, 2001.
This post is a call for support and awareness about chronic illness while
the scholarship is a means for me to give back to a community that has given
me so much. Hopefully it will serve as means of galvanizing positive energy
and bringing our community together. I hope that you will offer your
support, apply for the scholarship and pass this on to others that may be
interested.

But you admitted you were! You admitted you deliberately were an exclusionary
one to teach me a lesson. Whammo, I've just taught you a counter-lesson.
Reflect real hard.

See how angry and hate-filled you become over the same game you played on me.
Shallow, Zomp, real shallow. One little word (and you used many more on me)
sets off your inner need to be the evaluation God.
Go right ahead. Fill your heart with hate.
Why didn't I have just as much a right to go ballistic on you for your game
were you delieberately used exclusionary language "to teach me a lesson."
Isn't it nice of me not to react the way you did when I tried to return the
favor with one little word.
That hatred was pre-bottled and ready to serve.
Try to take a deep breath and relax. Maybe someday you'll let me take a
stance without having to tell me every single time what an asshole I am. Go
back and look in the archives. Every single time.
Work hard on not focusing so much of intense hate solely on me. Save some for
the sex harassers you claim to be so committed to stopping.
Adios,
Bear

So it's really pompous of me to take a stance against coach-student
relationships? Your hate truly truncates your reasoning. Please explain to
me, and the community, why I am uniquely pompous for taking a stance you and
many, many others claim to support? What is it specifically about me the
causes the bile to raise up in your throat?
You scare me. Your hatred makes me feel threatened.
Are you trying to teach me another lesson?

does anyone think this is enough for a restraining order....

I've received plenty of support both on the list and in many more
backchannels for my recent three-day marathon stance against sex harassment
in general and coach-student relationships, in specific. Thank you for those
that extended so much encouragement. You are the people that give me hope for
this community.
But, obviously, supposedly sympathetic forces will not allow me to continue
to use my voice. Every time I take a stance, there are those that work there
hardest, as I predicted, to silence my advocacy by dragging their personal
hated of me, as a person, in as a means of removing the focus from the
specific issue. It's usually the same couple of people every time.
But this issue, sex harassment and how we deal with institutional cover-ups
is too damn important to allow personal attacks on me to de-rail the subject.
I've tried my best, but my voice seems to draw the forces of exclusion and
verbal silencing like a magnet. Please, others of you must take up the cause
of not allowing this specific atrocity to sink into the background. What both
Kreuger and Church have done is wrong and I beg with all my remaining
personal strength for other, more powerful voices to step in and assume the
lead in keeping Church and MTSU accountable for the danger they left their
female students in. I know there are many of you with powerful, related
narratives. Now, in the last four days of this dysfunctional discourse mode,
callled eDebate, I implore those stronger voices to sing out. Sing out for
the hope of gender justice and for true enforcement of the CEDA Sex
Harassment guidelines.
Please don't allow the voices that seek to exclude me from this community to
shut down this dialogue or the continuing flow of revelations about Church's
prior knowledge of Kreuger's habits.
Speak out for justice. They simply won't allow me to be the primary messenger.
Debate's biggest pile of shit (Zompetti says so),
Bear,
good-by and good luck
