I have had some requests to repost the heart invitation. Remember, the
block of rooms at the tournament hotel will be cancelled on January 31. So
make your reservations now. We hope to see many of you in Lawrence next
month. Any questions can be addressed to me at spartlow at falcon.cc.ukans.edu
or 785-864-9893.

Additionally, there WILL be a jv division so be sure to indicate the proper
division on your entry.

Dear Colleague:

We would like to cordially invite your teams to participate in the
forty-fourth annual University of Kansas Donn W. Parson Heart of America
Tournament, to be held February 17, 18, and 19, 2001. We intend to offer
OPen and JV divisions. If there is sufficient interest we will offer a
novice division.

Heart Book:
The Heart of America entry form asks for information about each of the
debaters you bring. We use this information to put together what we call
the Heart Book, which is a compilation of your debaters. We are also
requesting
that you send us any photos of debaters and/or coaches. The best
photos will be included in the Heart
Book. We request that this year your comments about your squad be within
reasonable bounds of taste.

Fees:
The charge for each team will be $85.00. This fee covers the
cost of Student Union rooms for elimination rounds, receptions, lunches,
coffee and donuts, trophies, the tournament booklet, the case disclosure
list, and the awards brunch for all tournament participants. Schools
should provide judges for all teams entered in the tournament. Judges
should have an undergraduate degree or should have finished their college
debate eligibility. One judge covers two teams; uncovered teams will be
assessed at the rate of $80.00 per team. We would prefer that you provide
judges rather than pay the fee, as our judging pool may be limited.

Housing:
We urge you to make hotel reservations at once. We have designated the
Ramada Inn as the tournament hotel this year, which is the same hotel we
used last year. You should identify yourself as
being a KU Heart of America Debate participant when making reservations.

The Ramada Inn's address and telephone number are:

2222 W. 6th (785) 842-7030

the Kansas City airport to Lawrence, we recommend Superior Shuttle
(785)-838-4500.

Tournament Assumptions:
         1. Debaters should expect to use the 2000-2001 NDT/CEDA
resolution.
         2. We will offer 7 rounds of debate following the 9-3-6 format
with 10 minutes of preparation time.
         3. Pairings for Rounds 1 and 2 will be distributed at registration
in the Ramada. Changes to the
schedule will be posted at 11:00 p.m. immediately following the conclusion
of registration.
         4. Rounds 3 through 7 will be powered.
         5. All debates after round 2, including elimination debates, will
honor mutual preference judge
assignment.
         6. In each debate one team and only one team must be assigned a
win and the other team must be
assigned a loss. Partial wins and losses or any combination thereof will
not be accepted by the tab
room.
         7. We will not break brackets for elimination rounds.
         8. All elimination rounds will be flip for sides even for teams
that met in preliminary rounds.

Prizes for Elimination Debates:
Awards will be provided for all teams who advance into elimination debates
and we will clear the top 32 teams, into a double octa-final debate,
providing sufficient teams enter.
