>Dear Colleague:
>
>The University of North Texas Debate Forum and the Department of
>Communication Studies at UNT are pleased to invite you and your debate
>teams
>to attend the annual William R. DeMougeot Debates on December 1-3, 2001.
>The tournament this year will include two divisions of debate on the
>2000/2001 CEDA/NDT topic, have eight preliminary rounds in both Open and
>Junior divisions (assuming enough interest exists to maintain two
>divisions), and clear to an appropriate number of elimination rounds.
>
>We will attempt to maintain the same level of hospitality at the DeMougeot
>Debates this year including breakfast burritos, gourmet coffee, and our
>traditional trip to Siam House for Thai.
>
>Preliminary and elimination rounds will be held at the University. The
>tournament hotel this year is the Radisson, which has guaranteed us a
>special rate for participants in the tournament. You should make
>reservations as soon as possible. Registration will be at the Radisson on
>Friday night.
>
>I join with my assistants Travis Neal and Katie Hatziavramidis, and the
>entire UNT squad in welcoming you all to Denton for some fun and
>competition.

>December 1-3, 2001
>
>REGISTRATION: We will accept entries for the tournament through Wednesday,
>November 28th, at 5:00 pm. Please try to write us with your entry, or
>phone
>it in as soon as possible. You can also fax it to me at (940) 565-3630.
>Registration will take place at the Holiday Inn on Friday night. You can
>also reach me via e-mail at: ifjxh at hotmail.com or jbh at unt.edu.
>
>DIVISIONS: We will have two divisions of debate at the tournament this
>year.
> Senior division is open to any undergraduate student with eligibility.
>Junior division is open to any undergraduate with less than four semesters
>participation in intercollegiate debate.
>
>JUDGING: A qualified judge must be provided to cover your judging
>commitments. One judge is required for each two teams entered in any
>division. There may be some judges available for hire at the rate of
>$75/uncovered team, but you should let us know well in advance if you need
>to hire judges. Judging obligations extend through the first elimination
>round, or one round beyond your team?s elimination.
>
>FORMAT AND RULES: We will use the 9-3-6 format, with ten minutes
>preparation
>time per team in senior and junior divisions. Rounds 1-4 will be preset.
>Rounds 6 & 8 will be power-matched high/low within brackets; Rounds 5 & 7
>will be power-matched high/high. Debate teams consist of TWO persons from
>the same school. In instances where one individual cannot participate in a
>debate round, that team will receive a loss, and zero speaker points.
>Hybrid teams are acceptable, and may advance to elimination rounds, but any
>hybrid team including UNT students will be ineligible for participation in
>elimination rounds. In instances where one individual from a team cannot
>participate in a debate round, that team will receive a loss, and zero
>speaker points will be awarded to the team member not participating. All
>teams with a 5-3 record or better, up to 16 teams, will advance to
>elimination rounds. We will NOT break brackets in elimination rounds.
>
>While we do believe that there are some debates that are difficult to
>decide, we must insist that judges render a decision indicating that one
>(and, only one) team did the better job of debating. Judges who do not
>wish
>to render such a decision in a particular debate will defer their decision
>to a tab room managed toss of the coin to determine a winner and loser in a
>given debate.
>
>FEES: Entry fees are $60 per team for Senior and Junior division teams.
>This includes trophies, tournament supply expenses, and hospitality.
>
>HOUSING: We have reserved a block of rooms at the Radisson here in Denton.
>These rooms are priced at $79 room for a double. The Radisson is where the
>pairings will be released, and registration will take place. Please
>confirm
>your reservation at the Radisson by calling (940) 565-8499. Make sure to
>mention University of North Texas Debate. If the Radisson is sold out, or
>you are looking for lower priced alternatives to the Radisson I am
>including
>a list at the bottom of this invitation.
>
>
>TRANSPORTATION: We will provide shuttle service between the Radisson and
