under the Constitution, every state has a right of secession from the union,
or else that union is nothing more than a federated tyranny. though opposed
to the conquest of Mexican territory (aforementioned 'Polk's war'), Abraham
Lincoln was nevertheless a dictator: he suspended trial-by-jury, he hung
dissidents, he shut down abolitionist newspapers, he used emergency clauses
to consolidate federal power, and yes, he invaded another sovereign nation.
all that said, had i been alive at the time, i would've supported John Brown
and Harriet Tubman strategies to free the slaves, because that's what was
most important. Lincoln and many Northerners were willing to do whatever was
necessary, including supporting the nefarious Fugutive Slave Act, to save
the union - even if it meant not freeing the slaves in the four crucial
border-states (which the Emancipation Proclamation refrained from doing).
so as should be obvious to any real student of history, the American civil
war was not fought over slavery, but over state's rights, a war of Northern
aggression in which hundreds of thousands of Americans died in vain. the USA
today is a worse place because the South lost, and i'm tired of elitist
Yanks suggesting otherwise. if you think for a second that immigrant
factory-workers in the North were treated any better than slaves, you're
sorely mistaken.
as a neither-here-nor-there comment, everyone should watch the HBO special
in which black actors recite the Slave Narratives - a chilling potrait of a
barbaric institution carried out by people just like you and i. (what other
enslavements are we complicit in today? i wonder, i wonder. aren't millions
of blacks still in chains and executed by the state?)
