funny how both nm and duane spin this queer skool in exactly the opposite 
way: for nm, this is 'affirmative action' and the gays are getting 
'preferential treatment'; for duane, this is 'isolation' and the gays are 
being 'sequestered' - well, which one is it guys? don't get your buzzwords 
crossed before before drawing up your protest-posters.

to duane, yes i realize that actual interaction, friendships, 
business-relationships, etc. between heteros and homos is crucial to 
bridging the divide of misunderstanding and hatred ... and these kids will 
have plenty of opportunity to do that, and i'd argue that they'll be better 
able to do that if given some space to build confidence in themselves, and a 
place where they can learn that who they are isn't wrong, dirty, unnatural, 
etc. ... but bottom-line: this is their choice. it is not their obligation 
to befriend you and make you see the errors of your intolerance. instead it 
is your obligation to make sure that the public skools from which these 
students come will be as welcoming to queers as this skool. and that *is* 
what conservatives are continuously saying about the glories of skool choice 
and competition, isn't it? if you don't like this skool, duane and nm, then 
shouldn't you be calling upon the surrounding skools to remedy the social 
situation which necessitates such a skool? ... coop has a suggestion in this 
regard:

'But...wouldn't the more direct solution be to create a separate school for 
students who can not behave respectfully to their fellow gay classmates? 
Wouldn't it make more sense to separate them
out for social and institutional sanction?' ... if this were already the 
case, then i ask you, why would hundreds of students want to travel out of 
their way in order to attend an all-queer skool?

to nm, just tell me: do you want to end all-black colleges and/or all-black 
high skools? do you think that men have a right to be included in feminist 
ethics classes (which is why mary daly was fired from boston college)? what 
about all-catholic socials? what about all-male country clubs? what about 
magnet skools for creative writers - scrap those too? i mean, does every 
social institution in this country have to include asbolutely everyone or be 
compared to white supremacist segregration? ... please stop misapplying the 
court decisions regarding affirmative action and de-segregation: those must 
be understood in the historical context of hundreds of years of african 
enslavement and aparthied. last time i checked gay cops weren't fire-hosing 
down straight protesters in the streets; gays didn't lynch straights in 
droves; gays never enslaved straights by the millions to pick their cotton - 
so if alternate sexualities want to have their own skool, you should quit 
citing the legacy of racial inequality; in order to win your case, you'd 
have to show how straight kids are being excluded and disadvantaged, and 
from what i've read about this skool so far, i don't think there's a way the 
administrators could do so, even if they wanted to. like the folks say, 
'we're all queer'.            .k
