Subject: [eDebate] Draft Jake Weiner
Nothing would damage the Bush war machine like Jake on the front lines of Fallujah, wearing a floral patterned dress and bitching because his satellite phone doesn't pick up WWE Smackdown.
Listen, the reason to reinstate a draft isn't to replenish or reinforce the current war effort, but to raise the political stakes for upper-middle class American voters who don't pay any price when the volunteer army gets sent to Baghdad. I said it already, but when the 1960's generation thought they were fighting off the "military-industrial complex" by burning their draft cards and moving to Canada, all they did was lay the groundwork for a structure in which our government can engage in a protracted conflict without the politically influential having any incentive to oppose war.
I don't think a european or isreali model of mandatory military service is the answer. But I think that if, instead of just rotating our current "volunteers" back into harm's way even after their enlistment is up, the government should be hijacking me away from my cushy desk job. Then maybe my employers and my parents wouldn't still think war was such a good idea.
