[eDebate] Iraq's Soccer Team

Countries have multiple national teams. I coach a middle school team and one
of my players just returned from the under-15 national team tryouts in LA.
There are world championships for under-17 through under-23. These are youth
development programs for the men's national team which has no age
restrictions. Starting with the under-17 team, players selected for the
national development pool go into residence in Bradenton, FL

you will get an idea of just how many national teams we have. Even when we
talk about the men's national team, we are really talking about a pool of
players that can be called into residence by the US National team coach.
 
In men's soccer at the Olympics there will be very few superstars. Most of
the superstars are over 23 and are playing with their professional teams.
Like I said, Portugal only had one player at the Olympics that was a member
of their UEFA Cup (European Championships) team earlier this summer. The
real national teams are currently in the early stages of qualifying for the
2006 World Cup. The US men, for example, play El Salvador on September 4 in
a 2nd round World Cup qualifying match. Winning the Olympics in men's soccer
is nothing like winning the World Cup. The UEFA Cup and the Copa Americana
(both played earlier this summer) are much more prestigious--and they are
regional tournaments.
 
Women's Olympic soccer is different. Winning a gold medal in Women's Soccer
is almost as prestigious as winning the Women's World Cup.

Hi, What exactly does that mean? I don't follow soccer really at all (except
to know that David Beckham can bend a ball, and some guy named Freddy Adu
makes a ton of money for a 15 year old). Are these the same teams that play
in the World Cup? Or no? Duane
