(8/17) ? The Baltimore Urban Debate League is seeking an energetic,
committed individual who is passionate and excited about creating
educational opportunities for young people.

 The mission of the Baltimore Urban Debate League (BUDL) is to improve
educational opportunities for Baltimore City public school students by
empowering them to become engaged learners, critical thinkers and active
citizens who are effective advocates for themselves and their communities.
Through student participation in team policy debate, BUDL strives to
increase student academic achievement, increase graduation rates and
encourage more students to continue on to college. BUDL is determined to
make debate and its related academic and social benefits available to all
students in Baltimore' s public middle schools and high schools.

 In partnering with the Notre Dame Mission Volunteers ? AmeriCorps, the
BUDL' s College Access Program will continue to be developed to help make
educational opportunities more available. A core value for BUDL is
encouragement for every participant to gain confidence in her or his ability
to learn and succeed as a student, as a debater, and as an active leader in
their schools and the community. BUDL's College Access Program enables BUDL
participants to continue their educations and enhance their success by
gaining access to a college or university after graduating from their high

 The College Access Program provides college counseling, tutoring in college
essay writing, SAT test preparation, and assistance with the financial aid
application and process. Rising juniors & seniors participate in an
intensive, five-day Countdown to College summer camp where they complete a
college admissions portfolio. The College Access Counselor will then work
with high school students of all grade levels via school visits, office
hours and workshops.

 This Americorps position requires an eleven month commitment of
approximately 40 hours a week; efforts will be made to retain excellent
employees provided both parties are interested. Due to the nature of
after-school and weekend hours, flex time is available and encouraged. A
Bachelor's degree is required.

 Additional Qualifications:

Applicants should be passionate about education and social justice.
Excellent communication skills - presentation, one-on-one, telephone and
written - are required. No debate experience is necessary.
