I would echo Aaron's concerns. There seems to be a lazy tendency to allow
the computer to do virtually everything. Random may sound fair, but in
practice it can be incredibly inequitable. It may be difficult at the
beginning of the year to rank all teams, but there is enough historical data
to insure that no one team is paired against two obvious A's. Further, the
computer does not differentiate schools. How difficult is it to prevent one
team from meeting the same school in two pre-set rounds? At the beginning
of the year especially, variety would seem beneficial for all involved.
With more and more tournaments moving to six rounds and two pre-sets the
opportunities to balance out such inequities are significantly diminished
from the former eight round tournaments. Let's be as concerned with
fairness at the beginning of a tournament as we are when pairing round 6!
